LEE Hunchung is an internationally acclaimed artist working between ceramics, concrete and other materials. He is capable of producing a wide range of objects from small-scale decorative ones to creating large installations and furniture. Lee is contemporary in his approach to the materials he uses. He oscillates between clay, concrete, wood and lacquer. Although much of what he makes fit contemporary trends he still has roots in traditional Korean ceramics as he applies techniques used in ancient times. Even the colors he chooses are inspired by Korea’s natural environment. Lee is open to experiments always seeking for irregularity and coincidental effects. Often he likes to refer to his pieces as “three-dimensional landscape paintings” resulting from the hand as he thinks as he makes.

Over the last few years, Lee has gained much international attention. He has a following by collectors of art such as Brad Pitt, rapper Puff Daddy, architect Norman Foster, James Turrell and more. The vigor and energy poured into his work distinguishes Lee from others. He considers the process as a journey and recently he has included the notion of returning to the place of origin after a long journey—home referencing his studio in Yangpyeong, outside of Seoul. His studio is called “Camp A” and his shop in Seoul known as BADA Atelier is “Camp B”. Lee continues to challenge himself going beyond any limitations, whether it is the material he is using or a creative idea. The pieces in the exhibition are his series on vessels and the surfaces have been treated with gold, glazes and lacquer. They are one-of-a-kind limited art works.
